Announcement: CEO Transition to Chairman

BCP’s Board of Directors announces that Dr. Hassan Sachedina, our Founder and CEO, is moving into a new role within the company, effective 1st January 2022.

On 31 December 2021, Hassan will have served as CEO for exactly 10 years to the day. Hassan has decided not to extend his contract. As BCP now scales into replication, Hassan has decided to step aside from day-to-day management in favor of a more strategic role in the company. From 1 January 2022, Hassan will continue to support BCP as Chairman and will assist in the transition to a new CEO.

Hassan founded BCP when carbon markets and their future were uncertain and his perseverance, determination and vision have helped to establish us as one of the leading forest carbon project developers in the World. He catalysed and managed the development of a purpose-driven, climate start-up that grew into Africa’s largest REDD+ developer by hectares, and one of the largest in the world by social impact. Under his stewardship, BCP has helped to place Africa on the global forest carbon market map. Hassan’s dedication to BCP’s mission has resulted in the company benefitting over 225,000 people, who now experience the value of wildlife habitat conservation. Wildlife is recovering in some places, with over 1.2 million hectares under improved conservation management, and millions of tons of emissions reduced.  We are delighted to share that 2021 is set to become BCP’s best year in terms of climate and community financial impacts. BCP has received widespread industry recognition in the process.

“I am so grateful for my time as CEO of BCP,” said Hassan, “With the help of immensely dedicated staff, supportive investors and talented partners, we have built a strong foundation for BCP to tackle the challenges of the next 10 years. I am excited for BCP’s future and believe BCP’s strongest and brightest days are ahead. By 2030, BCP is set to deliver on our goal of avoiding 30 million tons of emissions annually, benefitting 3 million people, and partnering with communities across 30 million acres of globally significant wildlife habitat. I believe BCP will become the global leader in forest carbon project development and management. I look forward to supporting the BCP team in a new role and accelerating the climate and conservation space in new ways.

I owe a special thanks to Ms. Joke Hoffman, whose capacity to manage BCP from an operational perspective as BCP’s Chief Operating Officer gave me space to imagine, and to drive BCP towards this vision”.

BCP’s Chairman for the last 10 years, Tom Hancock added:

“Over the last decade, it has been my great pleasure to support and work with Hassan. In spite of the carbon markets being almost non-existent 10 years ago, we knew we had to back an entrepreneur with Hassan’s focus, endurance and commitment. Hassan met each obstacle and opportunity the business faced with steadfast determination. He has helped to advance the REDD+ sector globally, and his legacy is one we as a Board value and intend to build on. We look forward to Hassan’s continued strategic contribution to the company in his new role as Chairman.”

In addition to Hassan providing transitional support to BCP, our CFO Mr. Nic Mudaly will serve as Interim CEO, ably supported by HR Director, Ms. Nyembezi Nkunika-Lopa, and BCP Zambia’s new Country Manager (soon to be announced).
