National REDD+ Coordinator for Zambia, Mr. Deuteronomy Kasaro, Mr. Simon Bweupe—Chongwe District Forestry Officer, and BCP Trust’ Executive Director—with spare parts for his motorbike in the Chinyunyu Forest Station Nursery.
Recently, the BCP Trust presented a local Forestry Department Officer with the necessary new replacement parts to make his motorbike operational. After a year of being grounded, and now with his bike operational again, Mr. Bweupe will be able to provide critical support to local communities, including: helping to patrol local areas of forest to prevent deforestation or illegal encroachment, and providing resources and training to community tree nurseries and afforestation projects.
BCP considers the Zambian Forestry Department to be one of its key allies in promoting forest protection. As such, it is a priority for the Trust to ensure that District Forestry Officers based nearest to BCP’s Lower Zambezi REDD+ Project, are consulted, informed and supported towards being mobile—this allows officers to not only perform their regular duties towards ensuring Zambian forests are safe and healthy, but also, to provide invaluable support to local communities and to the BCP Trust towards their forest protection efforts.
